How to Calculate How Much Pine Straw Is Needed for a Landscape
Landscaped plants must be surrounded with loose material such as pine straw, mulch or rock to protect the plants. These materials protect the plant's roots from cold winter temperatures and help to retain moisture during hot summers. In addition, they make the overall landscape more aesthetically pleasing. Pine straw is readily available and easy to work with. Calculating the amount of pine straw needed for a landscaping project depends mainly on the size of the area. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place a tape measure at one end of the landscaping area. Pull the tape measure across the area and write down the length measurement in feet.
-
2
Place the tape measure at one side of the landscape area and pull it across to measure the width of the area in feet.
-
-
3
Multiply the total width by the total height to arrive at the total area, in feet, of the landscaping area.
-
4
Determine how many bales of pine straw you need to purchase to cover the area. You will need 1/2 pound of pine straw per square foot. For example, if the length of the landscaping is 10 feet and the width of the landscaping is feet, then it has an area of 100 feet. Multiply 100 by .5 to get 50. You need 50 pounds of pine straw to cover the landscaping area.
