How to Configure a KVM Switch

How to Configure a KVM Switch thumbnail
KVM switches are very convenient.

If you have a great deal of computer equipment, it can quickly overwhelm and outgrow the desk space you have available. Most of us simply do not have the room we need for multiple monitors, keyboards and mice, and in those cases a KVM switch can be an excellent solution. Once that KVM switch is in place, you will be able to use a single monitor, keyboard and mouse with several different computers.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the KVM switch in a convenient location on your desk. Make sure that the cables will reach the computers you plan to use with the switch.

    • 2

Connect your monitor to the monitor port on the KVM switch. In most cases, this port will be blue in color to make it easier to find.

    • 3

Connect the keyboard and mouse to the KVM switch. New KVM switches will generally have USB ports only, while older style switches may have PS/2 ports as well.

    • 4

Connect the cables from the back of the KVM switch to each computer you plan to use with that switch. Each port on the KVM switch will have a monitor, keyboard and mouse connector. Simply connect the appropriate connectors to the back of each computer.

    • 5

Turn each of your computers on, then press the button next to each port on the KVM switch. As you press each button, it will illuminate, and you will see the connected computer's display on your monitor screen.
