How to Attach Aluminum Siding

How to Attach Aluminum Siding thumbnail
Aluminum siding is easy to work with and install.

Aluminum siding is popular because it is fireproof, waterproof, and costs less than other siding options. It offers better insulation than vinyl siding, doesn't rot like wood, or rust like steel. Unlike other sidings, which usually must be professionally installed, aluminum siding is easy to cut and nail. It comes in a kit that includes the aluminum panels, attachments strips, and trim. Installing aluminum siding is at least a two-person job, as someone must help you hold the panels and line them up properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Spray down the walls with a power sprayer to remove any old paint, putty, or debris. Hammer any protruding nails into the wall, and smooth out any uneven surfaces.

    • 2

Place a foam board backing on the wall to ensure an even and seamless installation. The foam board also increases your home's insulation, saving you on heating and cooling bills.

    • 3

Draw a chalk line 8 inches above the ground before hanging the siding. Hang the starter strip from your siding kit by aligning the base trim along the chalk line. Allow 1/8 inch for expansion as you hang the siding.

    • 4

Hang the aluminum siding panels around the top, bottom, and sides of the doors and windows. Cut the siding as necessary with a radial arm saw and nail the panels to the wall with aluminum nails. Leave the nails slightly loose to allow the sliding to hang from them, since weather can cause the siding to expand.

    • 5

Hang the siding just above the starter strip. Overlap the panels by at least 1 inch, and stagger the joints for maximum stability. When finished, attach the corner pieces and trim.
