Plexiglass is an inexpensive, shatterproof alternative to glass used in nearly all of the same applications. You can work with it easily and cut it to any shape and size needed to fit your project. While cutting plexiglass is a simple task, you should follow some precautions and procedures to avoid chipping the edges of your cut pieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Leave the protective paper backing on the plexiglass until you are ready to install it. This covering will help protect the plexiglass from chips and scratches during the cutting process.

    • 2

Use a straight edge and a grease pencil to mark the line you would like to cut. Draw the line onto the paper backing.

    • 3

Use a glass cutter to score along the lines. Follow a straight edge to make sure the cut line is perfect. Score each cut line at least five to six times, being careful to follow the same line exactly each time.

    • 4

Apply firm, even pressure to the plexiglass until it breaks along the scored line. If you score it deeply enough, the plexiglass should make a clean break.

    • 5

Remove the paper backing from the plexiglass.

Tips & Warnings

  • When cutting shapes that are not straight lines, create a template of the shape to trace for scoring. The template will help ensure exact score lines.

  • When breaking the plexiglass, small shards may fly. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
