How to Troubleshoot an HP LaserJet 4
For many years the LaserJet 4 was a popular choice for business use, and many of these older workhorse printers are still in service. But with the warranty on these units long past, it can be prohibitively expensive to have a professional service technician diagnose and resolve common issues. In some cases the initial service call would be more than the cost of a replacement laser printer, so it is important for LaserJet 4 owners to know how to do some basic troubleshooting on their own.

1
Pull out each of the paper trays one at a time to isolate any jamming problems. Push each tray back into the printer one at a time and send a test page to the printer. If the paper is jamming in all of the trays there is probably an issue with the paper itself. If the jams are isolated to a single tray the rollers may be worn out.
-
2
Pull all of the paper out of the tray if the jams occur in all trays. Fan the paper thoroughly to remove any accumulated moisture. LaserJet 4 printers are quite sensitive to moisture in the paper, and that excess moisture often causes the pages to stick together.

3
Replace half of the paper and try your print job again. LaserJet 4 printers will often try to grab several sheets if the tray is filled up to the top.
-
4
Slide the tray out until it stops and carefully lift up on it to pull it free of the printer. If the paper jams are isolated to a single tray the rollers are probably worn out and will need to be replaced. Carefully reach into the printer and feel the rollers--if they are worn smooth they will not be able to grip the paper properly.
-
5
Slide the worn roller off of the bar and then slide the new roller on until it snaps into place. Carefully replace the tray and try your print job again.

6
Open the right side of the printer and remove the toner cartridge if you are seeing streaks or spots on the paper. Pull the cartridge out and look for toner spots under the cartridge. Carefully clean up that toner with a clean cloth. Check the toner cartridge for evidence of leaks before placing it back in the printer. If the toner is leaking it should be replaced.
-
7
Open the left door of the printer and locate the fuser cartridge. The fuser will be very hot, so it is a good idea to turn the printer off and allow it to cool first. Locate the small retaining clips that hold the fuser in place and flip them down. Carefully slide the fuser out of the printer and look for any jammed paper. Paper will sometimes accordian right inside the fuser cartridge.
