Many websites, including Speedtest.net, TestMy.net and Bandwidth.com, offer a free speed test to test your Internet's upload and download speeds. Checking your upload and download speed will verify that you are getting the speed you are paying for. DSL and cable Internet packages are broken down into upload and download speeds. You pay more for faster speeds. Common download rates are 1.5 mbps through 8 mbps.

Instructions

1. Use Speedtest.net. Click "Begin Test," and the site will test your computer's Internet speed. It will then report your download speed and your upload speed. If you're not happy with the results, you have the option to optimize your computer system by running another scan on the site. You can sign up for a free account to keep track of the speed tests and compare results.

2. Try TestMy.net. This site lets you test your download and upload speeds separately. It also offers an option for an express test, where it tests both. It even offers a speed test for mobile devices.

3. Go to Bandwidth.com/tools/speedTest and click "Begin Test." The site will test download speed first and then upload speed. If you want to increase your computer's bandwidth, fill out the form on the right of the page and click "Get Started." You will be contacted by a company representative.
