There is more to applying for a grant then just writing the grant proposal. With the proper preparation it will be easier to write a grant proposal and avoid wasting time applying for grants that you do not qualify for.

      Write a mission statement for the project your seeking grant funding for. The mission statement should clarify the purpose of the project and identify the projects goals and objectives.

      Identify possible funding sources. Look for a match between your project and possible funding sources mission statement. It is very important to choose wisely on what foundation you get funding from, you will be working with them for some time. Make sure that the funder or funders that are being looked at fund the type of project you seeking funding for. Many foundations and government agency's do not make many exceptions when they say they will not fund a particular type of expense or project.

      Contact the grant funders directly to talk to the individual in charge of grant applications, if possible. The contact person should be though of as a resource to get information when things do not seem clear in the guidelines.

      Get a copy of the grant guidelines. The grant guidelines should be read at least three times before you can be sure that your picking the right funding source. Talk with your contact person if you have any questions.

      Put the submission date on the organizations calendar. Make sure to make a mini self imposed deadlines for each task that is needed to be done before this deadline, to avoid a lot of wasted work.
