How to Replace the Battery in a Remote Keyless Entry for a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix

The battery in your keyless entry remote may need to be replaced every two years.

The battery in your 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix's power door lock remote typically lasts two years under normal use. If you find that you need to get closer to your car than usual to unlock it with the remote, you may need to replace the battery. The 1998 Grand Prix remote uses a CR2032 battery. The remote may lose the programming code that communicates with your car during the battery changing process. If this happens, you can synchronize your remote with the car in seconds.

Battery Replacement

1. Insert a thin, flat object in the slot between the two halves of the remote. Twist the object slightly to separate the two pieces.

2. Pry the battery out of the slot carefully. Do not use any metal objects to pull the battery out of the compartment.

3. Insert the new battery into the remote. Line the battery up to match the image printed in the battery compartment of your Grand Prix's remote.

4. Press the two halves of the remote back together securely. The remote should click together to let you know that it is fully connected.

5. Test your remote. If it does not work, you will need to synchronize your remote to the car.

Synchronization

1. Stand within close proximity to the car with your keyless entry remote.

2. Press the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons together and hold them for seven seconds. If your car is equipped with a theft-deterrent, the horn will sound.

3. Test the remote to be sure it is functioning. Repeat the process if it did not synchronize properly.
