How to Relieve Swelling in the Knee and Calf
Leg swelling that affects the knee and calf arises from a build-up of fluid. Various conditions can trigger swelling, such as standing for a long period, pregnancy, an injury or obesity. A swollen knee or calf may appear larger than normal, and swelling may impede your ability to stand. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce swelling.

1
Stay off the leg. Continuing to walk or stand with a swollen knee or calf can prolong the condition. Rest your legs by limiting walking, running and standing.
-
2
Remain elevated. While lying down use pillows to keep the swollen leg elevated above your heart. This position allows fluid to drain and reduces swelling.

3
Apply a cold compress. Place a bag of frozen vegetables or an ice pack on swollen areas for 20 minutes two to four times a day to help reduce swelling. Wrap ice in a cloth to avoid damaging your skin.
-
4
Limit salt. Consuming salt can trigger water retention and worsen swelling. Adopt a low-salt diet and eat no more than 1,500 mg a day. Drink extra water (about eight glasses a day) to reduce fluid retention.
-
5
Engage in gentle exercises. Improve blood circulation in your legs and reduce swelling with low-impact leg exercises such as leg lifts, Pilates and swimming.
