Make your own Mason jar gifts

Large-mouthed Mason jars are excellent containers for presenting homemade, country-style gifts and treats. As a get-well or just-because gift, place a delicious soup mix in a Mason jar along with a handy recipe card for a tag. Add a decorative lid cover made of fabric to finish the look. Make your gift green by recycling--use quart-sized glass jars you already own.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe out the jar and make sure it is absolutely clean and dry.

    • 2

Pour in the chicken bouillon powder. Tilt the jar with the left hand and pour the bouillon in with the right to keep the powder from flying around. Gently tap the sides of the jar to move the powder to the bottom.

    • 3

Pour in 2 cups of egg noodles. Move them around with your hand to even out the layer.

    • 4

Sprinkle on the layer of dried onions.

    • 5

Open the dried soup package and dump it on top.

    • 6

Place the jar insert on the top of the jar lid.

    • 7

Cut out a 6-inch square of fabric. Trim the edges with pinking shears for a decorative touch. Place the fabric on top of the jar and screw the lid in place.

    • 8

Write the soup recipe on a 3-by-5 card. Instruct the recipient to add all the ingredients to a quart of water and bring it to a boil. Then, turn down the heat and simmer the soup for 10 minutes to cook the egg noodles.

    • 9

Punch a hole in the corner of the recipe card. Attach it to the jar with twine or ribbon.
