How to Make Singing Sock Puppets
A type of hand puppet, sock puppets are easy and inexpensive to make. Sock puppets can be stylized to be anything you want them to be--from a person who tells jokes to an animal that sings. Singing sock puppets are one type of sock puppet. You only need to make a traditional sock puppet with a mouth. After that, you can stylize and accessorize your sock puppet to give your singing sock puppet that extra oomph.
Things You'll Need
- Sock
- A friend
- 2 pins
- Needle
- Thread
- Scissors
- Red flannel or felt
- Cloth, felt, buttons, yarn or whatever else you desire to use to accessorize your sock puppet
- Fabric glue

Put your dominant hand into the sock. Make sure your fingers are where the toes would go and the top of your wrist is located in the sock's heel.

Push the sock's toe with your off hand in between the fingers and thumb of your dominant hand (the hand that is inside the sock). This is the singing sock puppet's mouth.

Ask your friend to pin the folds at the two corners of the singing sock puppet's mouth.

Take off the sock. Be careful to not poke yourself with the pins.

Thread the needle.

Push the needle through the bottom portion of the puppet's pinned right mouth corner. Continue to push the needle through the fabric to the upper portion of the pinned corner. Pull the thread tightly. Once again, push the needle through the bottom portion of the puppet's right mouth corner. Tie a small knot in the thread right next to the final stitch. Cut the thread with the scissors.

Push the needle through the bottom portion of the puppet's pinned left mouth corner. Continue to push the needle through the fabric to the upper portion of the pinned corner. Pull the thread tightly. Once again, push the needle through the bottom portion of the puppet's left mouth corner. Tie a small knot in the thread right next to the final stitch. Cut the thread with the scissors.

Cut a tongue-shaped piece out of the red flannel or felt with the scissors. Glue the felt or flannel tongue onto the bottom of the sock puppet's mouth.

Decorate the singing sock puppet as desired with the yarn, buttons, flannel, etc.

Tips & Warnings
Consider cutting a microphone, guitar, keyboard, drums or other musical instrument out of cardboard for your singing sock puppet. Decorate the instrument with glitter, crayons or markers.
Always use caution when using sharp objects such as scissors and needles.
