One of the most common causes of a stuck window is dried paint. If a window frame is painted poorly, the paint will cover the cracks around the window edges and create a seal the prevents the window from opening. This is generally an easy problem to fix, but it can sometimes take hours of work to get the job done without causing damage to the window or frame. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety glasses, leather gloves and a long-sleeved shirt. It is best to be protected should the window happen to break.

    • 2

Unlock the window and check for any screws or nails that may prevent the window from opening. If there are screws or nails in the way, remove them with a screwdriver or hammer.

    • 3

Pry a sturdy putty knife between the edges of the window frame. Be sure to do it around the entire frame, both inside and outside of the house. This will break the seal and make it easier to open.

    • 4

Attempt to open the window. If the window does not open, gently tap along the edges of the window sill to further break the seal. Be cautious when doing this as it could cause the window to break.

    • 5

Attempt to open the window again. If it still does not open, examine the window tracks for paint buildup or anything else that could keep the window from opening. Remove as much of the buildup as possible with sandpaper. For hard to reach spots, you may need to scrape the debris out with a screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wipe mineral oil on the window tracks to help prevent future sticking.
