How to Check the Ink Level in XP

How to Check the Ink Level in XP thumbnail
Checking ink levels is not as simple as you think.

Checking the ink level on your printer in Windows XP is a relatively easy task. A printer, once installed, may have utility programs that will help monitor the progress of the printer or will have lights on the printer that will display when ink must be refilled or cartridges replaced. Sometimes the printer will only have lights to show if ink is low. There is no single method of checking for the ink levels on a printer.

Instructions

  1. Checking with XP Control Panel

    • 1

Check the back of the computer so that the printer is plugged in. Open the "Start" menu and click on the "Control Panel."

    • 2

Open the "Printers and Faxes" option if you are using the classic view. Or, if you are using category view, click the "Printers and other Hardware" button and then click on the "Printer and Faxes." Ultimately, you should end up on the "Printers and Faxes" window. The printers you have on your computer will appear in this window.

    • 3

Right-click the printer you wish to check. Go to the "Properties" option. This will display general information about the printer, including the current ink levels.

Checking with Manufacturer's Software in XP

    • 4

Open the "Start" menu and click on "All Programs."

    • 5

Select the folder that contains the software that came with your printer.

    • 6

Open the program that contains the software and check the ink levels from there.

Tips & Warnings

  • However, ink levels may sometimes be absent in your Properties Menu. Printer companies will usually have software to download so that you may check your ink levels or other status areas. HP has its Solution Center program, and other manufacturers have programs of the same sort.

  • If your printer came with software, it may be that it has diagnostic tools for your printer. This will be a better choice for getting detailed information on your printer. Check the manufacturer's website for your specific needs.

  • Note that this process only works in PnP (Plug and Play) "printers" as most printer manufacturers use their own software, such as HP, Epson, Lexmark, Dell and others, to operate the printer and check ink cartridge levels.
