Instructions

    • 1

Cut back on high-fat foods. Foods with high fat content take longer to digest. This produces more gas in the process. Eating natural foods and eliminating processed and fried foods decreases excess fat in one's diet.

    • 2

Use digestive enzymes if necessary. Some people are sensitive to some foods, which causes the production of gas. Lactose-intolerant people lack--or are deficient in--the enzyme lactase. Others are deficient in the enzyme that helps break down the natural sugars in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains. Lactase and Beano help remedy these symptoms, respectively.

Avoid swallowing air. People who eat or drink too fast tend to swallow a great deal of air. Gum chewing and sucking on hard candies are also the causes of swallowed air. A lot of smokers start to eat more or use gum and hard candy to keep their mouth occupied. To keep symptoms of gas in check, eat and drink slowly, and avoid gum and hard candies.

Use gentle yoga poses to alleviate symptoms of gas. Pawanmukta is a yoga asana (pose) that gently compresses the intestines, forcing "wind" (gas) out of the body.

To perform pawanmukta, place a yoga mat, exercise mat, or blanket on the floor. Lay on your back, and bring your right knee toward your chest. Wrap your arms around your shin or knee, clasping your hands together. Slowly bring your head up, chin toward chest. Gently pull your leg closer in, as you work your head closer to your knees, attempting to touch your nose to your knee. Hold for a few seconds and release. Repeat with the left leg, then both legs together. Repeat this two to three times per day.
