Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of the zest from the orange using a lemon zester. Place the zest into the canning jar. Crumble the cinnamon stick and the two bay leaves into small pieces and place into the jar.

    • 2

Place a 1/4 tsp. of allspice into the jar. Pour in a 1/2 cup of vodka and 2 tbsp. of Jamaican rum. Tightly screw the lid onto the jar.

    • 3

Store the jar in a cool, dark place where the temperature will remain between 50 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Closets, basements or garages make an ideal location for storing aging aftershave. Allow the jar to remain untouched for two to three weeks. During this time, the alcohol will extract essential oils from the spices.

    • 4

Pour the aftershave mixture through two coffee filters to strain out the spices and any other impurities. Repeat this process a total of three times to ensure that the resulting mixture is perfectly clear.

    • 5

Store the homemade aftershave in a nice glass bottle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to use bay leaves from the Pimenta racemosa family. They are typically found at health food stores rather than conventional supermarkets.
