1. Make a list of freelance job-bidding sites. A few job-bidding sites online that mediate between employers and freelancers. You can get paid to write by bidding for some of the writing jobs that are posted. Some common sites to check out are eLance, Freelancer, Guru, GetaCoder and oDesk.

2. Determine the fees for each site. Each job-bidding site will charge some type of fee for using their site. These can be flat fees or percentages of the jobs performed. Obviously this will cut into your profits so be sure you understand the fee system upfront.

3. Choose one or more job-bidding sites. After you have a list of the various freelance job sites, spend some time looking through each site to see how the site is setup. Your goal is to pick one to two sites to start bidding at, so you want to pick a site you feel comfortable navigating. Be sure to look through some of the writing jobs that are posted so you can understand the expectations and your competition.

4. Open up a PayPal account. If you want to get paid to write content, you will need a Paypal account no matter where you end up getting your work. Most job-bidding sites have an escrow system whereby the buyer pays the applicant through the site allowing protection of both parties from non-payment/non-delivery. But you will still need a PayPal account to transfer your money into from escrow.

5. Write sample articles. Almost every company will want to see a sample of your writing before hiring you. Pick a subject or two you are interested in and try to write an informative article that is about 350 to 600 words long.

6. Apply for a project. Peruse the listings on the job-bidding sites you have chosen to focus on and pick a few projects to bid on. When you first start out, you may need to bid multiple times before you are finally accepted. You may also need to bid an amount lower than you would care for to get some experience. Just make sure you do not bid for more jobs than you could handle at once just in case they all come through.

7. Ask for feedback. After you have completed your first project, make sure to ask the buyer for feedback within the site system. This will help you get more projects in the future and allow you to raise your asking price over time. As you establish yourself as a good writer who delivers according to the agreement, you can get paid to write content on a more consistent basis and for a higher amount of money.
