How to Change a Square Foot Into Cubic Yards
Square feet and cubic yards are two measurements commonly used in building and repair. Square footage is a two-dimensional measurement of area, while cubic yards measures the area of a three-dimensional space. Due to this difference, there is no formula into which to plug your numbers. Instead, you will need to take one more measurement, and then convert units.

1
Determine the number of square feet you have by multiplying length by width. For example, if your measurement is of a room 10 feet long by 10 feet wide, your square footage is 100 square feet.

2
Measure the third dimension of your area and then multiply that by your square feet. To continue the example, if the square footage measured is also three feet deep, the cubic feet in the space is 300 cubic feet. We can then convert cubic feet to cubic yards.

3
Convert from cubic feet to cubic yards. There are approximately 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Using the example, we divide 300 by 27 and get 11.11 cubic yards.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure to keep your units consistent during measurement. Mixing together yards and feet in the same equation will result in error. As demonstrated, the easiest way to convert between these units is to convert to cubic yards in the last step.
