While you can do this on your own, working with an objective third-party offers many benefits like assistance with defining the core issues. You and your spouse might also find it easier to talk honestly in a structured setting, such as a therapy session, where the therapist can guide the interaction.

3. Forgive each other for past mistakes that led to problems in the marriage. If you cannot truly forgive each other and wipe the slate clean, you will probably step right back into the old patterns of your relationship.

4. Admit your faults and the role you both played in the troubles in your marriage. This will help you build a new foundation in which you both take responsibility for making the relationship work. This can also help clear the air about any resentment you hold toward each other.

5. Share your thoughts with each other on what your ideal marriage would be like. Be honest with your wants and desired changes. This exchange will help you determine if you both can realistically build a life together that is acceptable to both of you.
