How to Troubleshoot Magnavox Converter Boxes

Troubleshoot a magnavox converter box to get the TV going again.

A Magnavox converter box transforms digital television programming into analog signals that can be viewed on older TV sets. The converter box uses standard audio-video cables to connect with a source signal, such as cable or satellite TV service, and the television. If something goes wrong, try these standard troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem and get back to watching TV.

Instructions

1. Check the cable connections to make sure the coaxial cable from the source signal (cable, satellite or antenna service) is securely attached to the coaxial jack. Remove and firmly re-insert the plugs on the composite or component cables connecting the Magnavox converter box to the TV.

2. Check the cable connections to the back of the TV to be sure the plugs are not loose or removed from the jacks.

3. Turn off all equipment, including the source signal, such as a cable or satellite receiver, and the TV. Unplug the Magnavox converter box from the electricity. Turning off the box at the switch is not sufficient--the box must be unplugged from the wall.

4. Wait five minutes, then plug the box back into the wall outlet.

5. Press the "Menu" button on the remote control and use the down arrow key to reach the "Scan" function.

6. Highlight "Scan Channels" with the arrow key and press "Enter" to re-program the box, then test for normal operation.

Tips & Warnings

• Set the television to channel 3 to receive signals from the Magnavox converter box.

• Verify the cable or satellite service is operating normally. The problem may not be with the Magnavox converter box.

• Unplug the Magnavox box from the electricity while checking, removing or adjusting AV cables.
