Garbanzo beans grow best in cooler climates.

Garbanzo beans, also known as chickpeas, are best planted soon after the last frost of the season as they grow better in cooler temperatures. Garbanzo beans grow best in full sun with ample water drainage. You can keep unshelled garbanzo beans in the refrigerator for up to a week and shelled beans for at least one year provided they are stored in a cool dry space. • 2

Plant the garbanzo bean seeds 3 to 6 inches apart from one another.

    • 3

Spread fertilizer lightly through the row or rows of beans.

    • 4

Cover the beans with the soil from the garden. Lightly tap the soil down with the hoe over the rows, but not too hard.

    • 5

Water the rows with a garden hose or bucket after planting, but do not drench them.

    • 6

Thin the sprouts to 6 inches apart when they begin to break through the ground. Cut with scissors.

    • 7

Water the beans regularly after they begin to flower.

    • 8

Harvest the beans after 100 days or when the leaves start to brown.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stop watering the beans after they have matured to allow them to dry before picking.

  • You may plant seedlings in peat pots inside the house for two to three weeks before planting them outside.

  • Avoid touching the beans after a rain storm or a heavy dew. You run the risk of spreading fungus by touching the beans when wet.
