How to Replace the Fill Tube in a Toilet
Replacing a fill tube that has cracks is not difficult. The fill tube feeds water from the fill valve to the toilet tank. Although it is rare, sometimes the fill tube will develop cracks and the water will spray through the cracks in the tube. Before replacing just the tube, inspect the fill valve to ensure that the valve does not have any defects. If water isn't running through the tube, the fill valve could have clogs or damage, preventing the water from reaching the fill tube. Purchase replacement fill tubes at home improvement centers. 1
Turn off the water supply valve behind the toilet. Turn the valve counterclockwise to shut the water off to the tank.
-
2
Remove the toilet tank lid and set it in on a flat surface.
-
-
3
Hold the top of the fill valve with one hand and carefully twist off the fill tube from the fill valve. The tube connects to a port near the top of the fill valve.
-
4
Disconnect the fill tube from the overflow pipe. The overflow pipe is directly over the flush valve in the center of the toilet tank. The tube will either fit into a ring inside the overflow pipe or a clip will be securing the tube to the pipe.
-
5
Place the old fill tube against the new tube and cut the new tube to the same length as the old with a pair of scissors.
-
6
Hold the top of the fill valve and push one end of the fill tube over the fill valve port until the tube seats completely over the port
-
7
Place the clip over the opposite end of the tube if your old tube had a clip securing it to the overflow pipe. Place the end of the fill tube in the overflow pipe and secure with the clip or by fitting the tube in the ring.
-
8
Turn on the water supply valve and flush your toilet. Check the connection between the fill tube and fill valve for leaks. Place the toilet tank lid back over the tank.
