When converting knitting patterns to crochet, gauge is the key.

Knitting and crocheting are similar art forms, but they are totally different when it comes to patterns. Knitting patterns can be converted to crochet, but with some difficulty. The most important thing that you need to be able to match up is the gauge. If you are an experienced crocheter, then you should be able to match up the gauge and convert most knitting patterns to crochet.

Instructions

    • 1

Crochet a gauge swatch until it measures about the same size as the required knitting swatch. Add or subtract rows or stitches as needed until you have created a swatch that is exactly the size needed.

    • 2

Count the stitches across and the number of rows it takes you to reach the size needed.

    • 3

Write out a formula whereby you replace the number of knitting stitches with the number of crochet stitches and the number of knitting rows with the new number of crochet rows, according to the swatch that you created.

    • 4

Sketch the knitting pattern out on paper using a ruler or measuring tape to approximate the size listed.

    • 5

Tape the pages together so that you create a basic paper pattern of all components of the design.

    • 6

Crochet your pattern, taking care to measure it against the template you created to make sure that the gauge matches up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Generally one row of knitting is equal to two rows of single crochet.

  • Crochet uses more yarn than knitting, so purchase extra yarn.
