How to Build Shelves With 3/4-Inch-Thick Wood

Attractive shelving adds a nice touch to your home.

Shelves are made of almost any species of wood or plywood. One traditional variety is 3/4-inch plywood. Plywood will hold more weight than solid wood shelves of the same size. The length and width of the shelf depends on the shelf supports. Shelves can be embellished with decorative trim. Further, several products can be added to shelves to increase the length a shelf can span without additional shelf supports.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the shelf you want to make. For adjustable shelves, subtract 1/4 inch from the width of the shelf. This gap provides room enough to allow the shelf to be adjusted.

    • 2

Measure the depth of the shelf. Subtract 1 inch from the depth of adjustable shelves. This allows for a 3/4-inch piece of trim on the front of the shelf and 1/4 inch for shelf adjustment.

    • 3

Measure the width of the cut and mark it on the bottom side of the plywood. Use a tape measure and a pencil.

    • 4

Draw a straight line at the mark across the width of the plywood. Use a T-square to make sure the mark is straight and square to the plywood's edge.

    • 5

Cut a straight line along the pencil line you just drew. A box knife will cut the top layer of plywood and help reduce any wood from splintering when using the table saw. Place a piece of painter's tape over the line you just cut. The painter's tape will also help reduce the splintering. Guide the cut with a straight edge.

    • 6

Place the plywood against the table saw blade. Adjust the blade height so that the blade comes above the surface of the wood by 1/4 inch.

    • 7

Adjust the table saw's fence to the width of the shelf. Run the plywood through the table saw, keeping the edge against the table saw fence.

    • 8

Pin-nail the decorative wood trim onto the face of the plywood shelf. A pin nailer and glue work best for this step. Stain and finish to your taste.
