Get that mouse back in working order by diagnosing common issues.

Your mouse is one of the most essential peripherals for your computer. Without it, you won't be able to select or highlight data. If you are having trouble with your mouse, there are several things you can do to try and identify where the problem is coming from. Once the problem has been identified, the user can also take steps to correct whatever issue is causing the mouse to malfunction.

Instructions

Check the bottom of the mouse. One of the most common issues that a mouse can have is a dirt build-up. If your mouse uses a rollerball, this junk can build up on the ball as well as the plastic wheels touching the ball. If the mouse is optical, dirt can build up on the surface of the light as well as on any grooved plastic pieces. To take care of this issue, dip q-tips in rubbing alcohol and gently swab the dirty areas clean.

Look at the connections. If the mouse is corded, look for loose connections or a tangled cable. If the mouse is wireless, check your adapter and make sure the wireless signal is broadcasting.

Download software. If you have recently performed a system restore or you have installed a new operating system, your mouse may stop working suddenly due to a missing driver. If the mouse came with a software CD, install the contents of the CD to restore functionality. If not, visit the manufacturer's website and look for driver downloads in the support section.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have dropped your mouse or the shell has been damaged, you will need to have it professionally serviced to restore functionality. However, generally it is cheaper to replace the mouse rather than repair it.
