How to Publish Your First Erotic Book

How to Publish Your First Erotic Book thumbnail
A good erotic book gets you in the mood.

The process of publishing an erotic book is similar to publishing any genre of book. Not only does the book have to be high quality, well-written and unique enough to stand out from all the other new submissions to publishers, it has to fit the particular market that a publisher targets with all its books.

Instructions

    • 1

Fine tune your writing. Before you submit your book to a slew of publishers, be absolutely certain that it is at least on par with other books erotic publishers are issuing these days. Make sure the grammar, syntax and spelling are flawless. Get feedback from other readers and don't be content until it is so good that they can't put the book down. The plot and dramatic force of both the erotic scenes and the story should take readers from the first page to the last page.

    • 2

Publish online first. Most erotic book publishers want to see that you have at least an online track record in publishing your stories. This shows them not only that you have an online following of readers but also that they have experience that will carry over to a nice marketing blurb when they do publish your book. Online erotica publishers include Literotica.com, SexTails.com and LustyLibrary.com.

Submit your work to the right publisher. Some publishing houses will work with first-time writers and others will not. There are some publishing houses, such as American Taboo Press, that actually seek first time writers or experienced writers who want to put out erotica under a pen name. Other well-known publishers include Cleis Press, eHarlequin and Ellora's Cave. There are dozens of other small publishers that seem to come and go from year to year. Check the Erotica Readers & Writers Association's website for a current list of publishers.

Consider self-publishing. While many readers and publishers are wary of books that have been self-published, at least it gets your name out there. Companies such as CreateSpace and Lulu allow anyone to get their book in print, and listed for sale on Amazon.com, for a very low fee.
