Giving your puppy a rubber bone can help deter it from chewing cords.

Puppies often start chewing everything in sight as soon as they start teething---even things they shouldn't. Not only can chewed cords destroy your electronics and appliances, electrical cords pose a serious danger to your dog. Safeguarding cords and other potentially dangerous items from chewing dogs is extremely important until your dog learns not to chew inappropriate items.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Give your dog appropriate toys to chew, such as hard rubber balls and bones. Teach your dog to chew these items by scolding it when it chews on cords or other inappropriate items and immediately giving the toy you want your puppy to chew.

    • 2

Hide cords behind furniture and other heavy objects that your dog cannot move to discourage it from chewing on them.

    • 3

Install cord hiders or protectors. These protectors are usually made out of plastic or rubber. While your dog may be able to chew through cord covers, it can buy you enough time to catch your puppy in the act before it gets hurt.

    • 4

Place your dog in a room where he cannot get to electrical cords if you are unable to supervise him.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep several chew toys on hand so that you can switch them out periodically. This can help prevent your dog from getting bored and finding inappropriate objects to chew.

  • Do not apply liquid sprays or gels made to deter chewing to electrical cords. This can create fire and electrical shock hazards.
