How to Care for an Antique Marble Wash Basin Stand

Many antique marble wash basin stands weren't chemically treated to make them as durable as some of the furniture of today. However, with some basic care, the wash basin stand will last a long time. Whether the entire stand is marble, or a combination of marble and wood, the care requirements remain the same.

Things You'll Need

• Soft cloth
• Liquid dish washing detergent
• Wax

Instructions

1. Dust the basin stand daily using a soft cloth. A flannel cloth is ideal for the job as it won't damage the marble.

2. Clean the marble using a solution of 1 gallon of water mixed with 1/2 cup of liquid dish washing detergent. Use a clean, soft cloth to wipe the stand with the solution. Use another cloth dipped in clean water to rinse the marble. Wipe with a dry soft cloth.

3. Keep the stand away from extreme and sunlight, as these may weaken the stand or cause it to fade.

4. Wax the stand with a wax appropriate for antiques at least twice per year.

5. Contact a professional antique restorer if you notice any cracks or other defects in the stand. An antique restorer may be able to fix the problem for you.

Tips & Warnings

• Never use harsh chemicals or stiff brushes to clean the stand. These items may damage the stand to a point where it isn't repairable.
