How to Cut the Corners on a Fleece Blanket

Fleece is convenient for beginner sewing projects, like blankets, because it is slightly stretchy and it does not get frayed like woven fabrics. The biggest problem new sewers experience, when making fleece blankets, is that the corners of the blanket curl up if they are squared. Curling occurs when the finishing stitches used to complete the blanket's edge pull the pointed corners, so to make the corners of a fleece blanket lie smooth, round them slightly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the corner of the blanket so it lies flat on your work table. It does not matter which corner you work on first.

    • 2

Measure 2 inches up each side, beginning at the point of the corner. Make a small mark with the tailor's chalk at each 2-inch mark. The small mark will be about 1/8 inch long; it just must be big enough that you can see it.

    • 3

Set the can of food on the corner of the fleece and line up the edge of the can with the small tailor's chalk marks. A small triangular tab of fleece will stick out past the round edge of the can. Trace around the can with the triangular piece of fabric sticking out, with the tailor's chalk. This will give you a perfectly rounded cutting line. Do not trace on the big part of the blanket.

    • 4

Cut the fleece with the scissors or rotary cutter, following the curved tailor's chalk line.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer to work with a sewing tool that looks more professional than a food can, or if you want a wider curve, use a protractor or a radial curve corner ruler. Radial curve corner rulers usually are available only at quilting supply shops.
