How to Make a Golf Display Case

How to Make a Golf Display Case thumbnail
A display rack shows off your most-prized signed or hole-in-one balls.

Through the course of most avid golfers' time on the links, they are sure to run into holes and rounds which they would like to remember. A great way to remember a great shot or score is to save the golf ball used to make it and keep it on display in your home, where you can see it and be reminded of it on a daily basis. A golf display case also enables you to show off souvenir balls, such as autographed balls or stamped balls that commemorate major golf tournaments.

Instructions

    • 1

Bevel the 3 3/8-inch-long sides on the two side pieces (the 12 inch long planks) and the top and bottom pieces of the frame (the 9 inch long planks) with the 45-degree bit.

    • 2

Attach blades to the table saw for a 1/2-inch-wide cut and adjust the height of the blades so that they are 3/16 inches above the cutting surface.

    • 3

Use the ruler, T-square and pencil to make three lines on the inner face---the side with the beveled edges---of each of the two side pieces. One line should be centered along the length of the side, with the other lines located 3 inches on either side of the center line.

    • 4

Cut grooves into the side pieces over the lines drawn in Step 3 with the table saw. These will allow you to slide the shelves of the rack in after constructing the frame.

    • 5

Make a mark in the center of each of the shelves---the three identical planks---and two more marks, each 2 1/2 inches from the first mark, on either side of the center mark. All three marks should be centered across the 3 3/8-inch depth of the shelves.

    • 6

Drill through the marks with a 1/2-inch bit to create holes to hold the golf balls.

    • 7

Cut a 1/8-inch deep, 45-degree bevel around both short sides and one long side of the top and bottom caps (the 3 7/8 inch wide planks.) All three bevels on a cap should be on the same face of the cap.

    • 8

Glue the sides, top and bottoms of the frame together and clamp with wood clamps. Wipe off any excess glue with the damp rag after clamping. The 45-degree bevels on the sides, top and bottom will allow the pieces to fit together at right angles, making a rectangular box.

    • 9

Apply glue to the grooves in the side pieces and insert the shelves into the grooves. Wipe off any excess glue after inserting the shelves.

    • 10

Glue the cap pieces onto the frame. The bevel of the caps face the frame---meaning the bevel goes on the top face of the bottom cap, and bottom face of the top cap---with the nonbeveled edges of the caps flush with the back of the frame. Hold in place with wood clamps and wipe off any excess glue.

    • 11

Stain the display the color of your choosing.
