How to Make Fimo Food
Polymer clay, which goes by such brand names as Fimo, Kato, Primo and others, is basically poly vinyl chloride. It is a moldable and incredibly versatile medium that can be used to make everything from jewelry to faux food. The faux food you can make with polymer clay is limited only by your ability. You can get started by making a “peanut butter and jelly sandwich."
Things You'll Need
- Polymer clay (white, yellow, brown, purple and red)
- Large piece of tile
- Acrylic roller
- Tissue blade
- Knitting needle
- Liquid polymer clay
- Plastic container lid
Instructions

1
Place the tile on your work surface. Knead one-half cube of white polymer clay with a small pinch of yellow and brown polymer clay until completely blended and pliable. Roll this into a cylinder shape that is approximately 1/2 inch in diameter and 1-1/2 inches long.

2
Knead one-quarter cube of brown clay with one-quarter cube of white clay until it is blended and pliable. Roll this out into a sheet with an acrylic roller. Cut it with the tissue blade into a rectangular shape that is 1-1/2 inches in length and wide enough to wrap around the cylinder created in Step 1. A tissue blade is a very thin, long and flexible piece of metal with one long end that is very sharp. They can be found at most craft stores. Using this tool will result in a much cleaner cut.

3
Place the cylinder inside of the rectangle and gently roll the rectangular sheet around the cylinder. Smooth the seam where the two edges of the rectangle meet.
-
4
Gently shape the roll into a trapezoid shape with your fingers or by pressing it down against the tile you are working on. Position the clay so that the widest part of the trapezoid is at the top. Use a knitting needle or similar instrument to make a slight depression along the length of the widest part. It should now resemble a tiny loaf of bread. Place the mini loaf of clay bread in the freezer for approximately fifteen minutes to let it firm up.
-
5
For the "jelly," mix a pinch of purple and red polymer clay with approximately ¼ tsp. liquid polymer clay in a plastic container lid or similar object. Mix a pinch of brown and yellow clay with another ¼ tsp. of liquid clay for the "peanut butter."
-
6
Remove the clay loaf of bread from the freezer and, using a clay tissue blade, slice the bread into several pieces.
-
7
Place a small amount of the jelly mixture from Step 5 on one of the slices of bread, then place a small amount of the peanut butter mixture on another slice. Leave them separated or carefully place them together to form a sandwich. Bake the clay right on the tile according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Tips & Warnings
You can also make these "life-size" by following the same procedure but using more clay.
A few of the uses for polymer clay food are for dollhouse food, refrigerator magnets and little earrings.
When using the clay tissue blade, use caution and make sure you don’t grab the sharp edge of the blade by mistake.
If you make life-size polymer clay food, remember to keep it out of reach of small children who might mistake it for the real thing.
