How to Remove Professional Window Tinting

How to Remove Professional Window Tinting thumbnail
Professionally tinted windows won't last for the life of your car.

Even if your car's windows were professionally tinted, there will come a time when the tinting will need to be removed. As window tinting gets old, the glue dries out and bubbles form between the tint film and the glass, according to the experts at Advanced Auto Parts. With age, window tinting may also turn purple from constant exposure to the sun. Rather than putting up with the worn-out hue of a an aged window tint, you can remove it from your car's windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out a piece from a black trash bag in the exact shape of the outside of your tinted window. Spray the outside of the window with soapy water and place the cut piece of trash bag over the window. Smooth it out so that it adheres to the glass.

    • 2

Lay another piece of trash bag across the interior of your car, underneath the tinted window, to avoid getting any chemicals or dirt on your upholstery. Spray an even amount of diluted ammonia over the entire tinted window, making sure to get to the very edges of the glass.

    • 3

Place another strip of black trash bag over the inside of the window (of a similar size with the window) while the ammonia is still fresh. Press it into place, so that it adheres to the window. Let your car sit out in the sun for a few hours. The sunshine will heat up the black trash bags, softening up the window tint.

    • 4

Slowly peel off the black trash bag stuck to the tint on the inside of the window. It should peel off the window tint. If the tint gets stuck as you pull, use a razor blade to coax it off the glass.

    • 5

Use the ammonia mixture and super-fine steel wool to rub away any tinting glue residue from the inside of the glass. Wipe off any extra ammonia with paper towels. Remove the trash bag that was adhered to the outside of the glass. Clean both sides of the glass with glass cleaner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use a razor blade on the window if you're removing tint from a back window with defrost lines on the glass. The razor blade may remove or break these lines.
