A paper fortune teller is made by folding paper into a four-cornered device that is manipulated by the fingers on one hand. It is an old folding game for children that is used to tell people's fortunes or predict the future. A paper fortune teller is also called a cootie catcher. You can fold your own fortune teller paper crafts and have your friends choose their fortune by picking the colors and numbers written on the flaps.

Step 1

Place a sheet of paper on a flat surface with one of the short 8.5-inch sides nearest you. Fold up the right bottom corner over to the left side to leave a section exposed at the top of the paper. Cut this section off to make the rectangular paper into a square. Leave the paper folded in a triangle.

Step 2

Fold the right corner of the triangle over to the left corner to make a smaller triangle with the paper. Completely unfold the paper. Fold the top and bottom corners so their tips meet the center crease. Fold the right and left corner to the center so their sides are touching the other two corners. The paper should now be a square shape.

Step 3

Turn the square over so the folded corners are now facing down. Fold the top corner of the square in to meet the center crease. Fold the opposite corner in to the center crease. Fold the other two corners in so that they are touching the edges of the first two corners to create a smaller square with the paper. Fold the square in half. Unfold the square, and fold it in half the other way. Unfold the square. Pull the four corner ends up together to create a diamond shape. Lift each of the bottom flaps of the square and insert your fingers into them. You should be able to move the four separate sections with your fingers.

Step 4

Write the names of four different colors on the four outer flaps. On the inside, write eight numbers on the triangle flaps. Lift each of the eight flaps, and write a fortune under each one.

Tip

To play the fortune-teller game, have a person choose a color, spell out the color and move the fortune teller in and out with your fingers. Have the person choose a number that is showing on the inside, and move the fortune teller in and out that number of times. Have the person choose one of the numbers, and open the flap to reveal his or her fortune.
