How to Refill an HP 92 Ink Cartridge

How to Refill an HP 92 Ink Cartridgethumbnail
Refill kits are available for the HP 92 ink cartridge.

The HP 92 ink cartridge houses only 5 mL of ink, making it much smaller than the 20 mL capacity of many other black ink cartridges. The diminished capacity of the cartridge requires more frequent replacement by the user--approximately every 200 pages according to the manufacturer. Off-brand ink replacement kits that allow you to refill the HP 92 cartridge yourself are available and less costly than purchasing new cartridges. Always purchase ink refill kits made specifically for the HP 92 cartridge.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Replacement ink kit for HP 92
    • Paper towels or newspapers
    • Empty HP 92 cartridge
      • 1

Choose a flat surface in an area that can tolerate an accidental ink spill, such as a garage or other outdoor area. Lay paper towels or newspapers over the work area.

      • 2

Locate the small house icon on the front of the HP 92 ink cartridge sticker. Peel from the right corner next to the icon slowly to remove the label. Avoid touching the copper electrical connections on the printer cartridge; oily fingers can corrode the surface.

      • 3

Note the five holes in the HP 92 cartridge--four on the bottom and one on top. You will only fill up the top hole on the cartridge; it is the only active chamber in the HP 92 cartridge.

      • 4

Uncap your replacement ink. Fill up the kit syringe with the black ink only to the 5 mL mark on the syringe--the maximum capacity for the HP 92 ink cartridge. Avoid overfilling the syringe so you do not overfill the cartridge.

      • 5

Inject the syringe into the topmost hole, depressing the plunger very slowly to fill the cartridge and to avoid an overspill. Wipe any areas on the cartridge from ink residue before replacing the HP 92 label. Smooth the label over the holes and check the cartridge for leakage.

      • 6

Replace the HP 92 cartridge back in the printer only if it did not completely run out of ink before refilling. Otherwise, allow the cartridge to rest on the paper towels with the label facing up for one hour before placing inside the printer.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Try to refill your HP 92 cartridge either just prior to running out of ink or immediately afterward. Smaller cartridges dry up quickly; dried up cartridges, even after refilling, will often not print.

    • Overfilling the small HP 92 cartridge can lead to leaking, color contamination and can halt printing operations. Never put a leaking cartridge into an HP printer--it can permanently damage it.
