How to Add Backlinks

Adding backlinks is a useful way to increase traffic to a website.

Backlinks, as the name suggests, are nothing more than links that lead back to a website. People add backlinks primarily to increase the amount of traffic coming to a webpage. Adding backlinks is simple. Adding quality backlinks takes a bit more effort.

Instructions

1. FIND A WEBSITE TO DROP THE BACKLINK. This is important because it will determine whether the backlink will be a quality one or not. Good places to look are related forums or blogs, social bookmarking websites (Digg, Reddit, Proppeller), and article directories (eHow, Ezinearticles, Squidoo and Article Base).

2. COMMENT OR CONTRIBUTE to that website. Comments are self-explanatory, but a contribution could be as lengthy as an entire article. This will allow you to actually add the backlink, and if what you have to say is knowledgeable, people will be more inclined to follow the link back to your website.

3. ADD THE BACKLINK by copying and pasting your website's URL in the comment / contribution you made. If the backlink is not automatically hyperlinked, you should do so yourself. Follow the instructions in the "How to Make a Hyperlink" link in this article's Resources section if you need help.

4. REPEAT the process once your first backlink has been successfully added. Backlinks work best in high quantities, so search for other similar websites and continue dropping them to attract more and more traffic to your own.

Tips & Warnings

• Backlinks from authoritative (high-ranking) sites are extremely valuable. Even more so if both sites have content geared toward the same keyword or topic.

• Anchor text, (the text that makes up a hyperlink), should always have your website's keyword(s) in it.

• Use the "Backlink Builder" website found in this article's Resources section to find websites where you can produce quality backlinks.

• Relevant comments and contributions are less likely to be deleted as spam.

• A hyperlink will allow visitors to come to your website just by clicking on the text in the link. Because it is convenient (and eye-catching), people will be more likely to follow a URL if it is hyperlinked.

• You can leave backlinks as digital signatures in email and forums as well.

• Some backlink techniques, like linking to spam sites, web pages with illegal content or link exchanges can get your website banned from search engines, so avoid doing any of these practices.

• Adding backlinks is almost a never-ending process, because you can almost always add more. The rewards, however, are definitely worthwhile
