The HRIS, or Human Resources Information System, is an integral part of human resource departments around the world. Those who are proficient in the HRIS system will be able to work in a wide variety of industries with a great potential for advancement. Learning the HRIS system is a process made up of several skill sets and pieces of knowledge that must be mastered over the course of a multi-step process.

      Learn software programs. Learn software applications such as Oracle and Microsoft Office. The best way to learn these software programs is to enroll in a class at a local community college or simply purchase a guide book at a bookstore that is specific to the software program you want to master. Once you have basic knowledge the best way to learn is to practice the different functions by using the program.

      Learn payroll applications and other human resources skills. The best way to become proficient in these areas is by working in a human resources department. The ideal situation is working under an experienced manager that can teach you the intricacies of the specialty.

      Learn HTML, JAVA, ASP and XML. Take a class in scripting or read books to learn these skills. Once you have gained the basic knowledge that entry level courses and books will give you, apply the concepts by programming on your own.

      Begin working in a human resources department. Search human resource jobs on local and national job boards. Clearly state your skills and knowledge of HRIS to give yourself the best chance at getting the job. Upon being hired, work as an administrator in a human resources environment and refine your skills.
