Instructions on Making a Tie Blanket

Made from polyester fleece that resists wrinkling and raveling, tie blankets can be a personalized gift for baby showers, hostesses or holidays. Requiring no sewing skills, youth and adults alike can make a tie blanket in a single afternoon, and groups can create several for craft sales or special events.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 pieces of polyester fleece, 58 inches wide, 1 to 2 yards each
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Ruler or measuring tape

Instructions

    • 1

Trim the selvage end from each piece of fleece. Cut each piece of fleece the same size, to the finished size of the blanket.

    • 2

Lay one piece of fleece on top of the other on a large flat surface with the right sides of the fleece facing outward (wrong sides together). Line up all four edges. Pin the pieces of fleece together around the perimeter, approximately 2 inches from the edges.

    • 3

Cut fringe around all four edges. Make 1-inch cuts perpendicular to each edge, about 1 inch apart all the way around, cutting through both layers of fleece. For larger blankets or for longer fringe, make 2-inch cuts.

    • 4

Tie a knot in each corresponding top and bottom piece of fringe. Holding the bottom piece in your right hand and the top piece in your left hand, cross the left over the right then tuck it under and through the knot. Pull tightly. Cross the right over the left, then tuck it under and through the knot, pulling tightly.

    • 5

Secure the knots all the way around the blanket and trim the fringe as needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash your fleece according to manufacturer's instructions, using a fabric softener in the rinse cycle, to pre-shrink the fleece and help reduce static cling as you work.

  • Use fleece tie blankets for babies as a decoration or play mat only. Never put a baby to sleep with a fleece tie blanket or other plush blanket or comforter to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
