There are two methods of planting grass: planting seeds or planting sod. The relatively harsh climate in Texas makes planting grass seeds a much more difficult option than planting sod. The recommended types of grass for Texas are Bermuda, St. Augustine and zoysia. Many grasses come in rolls of sod, but these three varieties come in plugs which are only a few inches wide and 2 or 3 inches deep. Planting these plugs is an easy process that even a novice gardener can do. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Using the tiller, till the area where the grass is to be planted to a depth of about 4 inches.

    • 2

Spread 2 to 3 inches of topsoil across the tilled area and till again to mix in the topsoil.

    • 3

Using the fertilizer spreader, cover the area with the appropriate lawn fertilizer for the type of grass being planted.

    • 4

Using the garden hose, soak the entire area and wait for the soil to settle.

    • 5

Using the garden trowel, dig a hole for each grass plug. Each hole should be roughly 1 foot apart and slightly larger than the plug going into it.

    • 6

Place the grass plugs in the holes, making sure they are packed into the ground firmly.

    • 7

Using the garden hose, thoroughly soak the areas in which the plugs have been planted.

Tips & Warnings

  • The best time for planting grass is in the spring when the temperature is cool.

  • The plugs will grow and merge into each other, giving you complete coverage.
