Scoring the test

The Woodcock Reading Mastery test can be administered to anyone from the age of 5 up to 75. It takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to administer each cluster of tests or 45 minutes to one hour for the entire battery of tests. The areas covered are reading readiness, basic skills in letter and word identification, memory and reading comprehension. The average score for a five-year-old is 1 and 96 for a 12th grader.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin testing at the test starting-points indicated. Once a student has completed six items satisfactorily, continue on to the next section--this will be the student's baseline. When less than six responses are correct, go back a page and readminister in full. Continue to test backwards, starting with the first item on a page, until the first six items on a page are correctly answered.

    • 2

Score the Word Identification section. If the student misses the first item, say it aloud and ask the student to repeat it. Do this only for the first item. Write "0" if any other items are unknown or misread. Write down all incorrect responses exactly as they are said.

    • 3

Score the Word Attack section, beginning with the two sample items. If the student scores 0 or 1 on the word, record a score of 0. If the student does not answer within five seconds, record a 0. Do not sound the word out; pronounce each word naturally, writing down the exact responses.

    • 4

Score the Word Comprehension section beginning with the first practice item. Have the student read each item aloud and respond aloud. Do not count mispronunciations as errors. Write down exactly what the student says, even if it is wrong. Write in any comments or thoughts about the process as you go.

    • 5

To score each section, add up the correct responses. Add in one additional point for each item below the baseline or those that had to be administered after getting less than six correct.

    • 6

On the Reading Vocabularies five subtests, count the number of correct responses. Each response will be coded on the test record with "G" for general reading, "SM" for science and math, "SOC" for social studies and "H" for humanities.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is a good idea to study the pronunciation guide on pages 28 through 29 prior to administering the Word Attack section.

  • In scoring antonyms and synonyms for the Word Comprehension section, calculate the score for each subtest and add them up. This will be the "raw," or total, score and can be converted to a partial score when divided by each section.
