How to Make a Stereo Camera

Being able to perceive depth in an object or scene is what makes seeing in stereo (or three diminensions) so different than watching something on a movie screen or on television. People can see 3D because they have two eyes and each can see the same scene from a slightly different perspective to the other. You can make a simple 3D camera that will demonstrate the stereo effect when you look at the two pictures that are taken. The cost will be minimal and the assembly time is less than 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Two disposable film cameras
  • Duct tape
  • Ruler

Instructions

    • 1

Put one of the disposable film cameras down on a table with the lens facing up and the shutter button at the top.

    • 2

Place the second disposable film camera down on the table with the lens facing up and to the left of the first disposable film camera. Rotate the camera 180 degrees so that the shutter button is now at the bottom.

    • 3

Line up the right edge of the second disposable film camera to the left edge of the first.

    • 4

Place the ruler across the two lens of the disposable cameras. Line the ruler up so that both lenses are equidistant to each other.

    • 5

Tape the sides of the disposable camera together with duct tape.

    • 6

Wind the film knob of both disposable film cameras to prepare to take a picture on the first frame of the film. Aim the lens of the two disposable film camera at a scene outside.

    • 7

Place your left index finger on the shutter bottom that is at the bottom of the second disposable film camera. Place your right index finger on the shutter button that is at the top of the first disposable film camera. Press both shutter buttons together.

    • 8

Have the film developed. Place two prints that are of the same scene down on a table side by side. Cross your eyes to cause the two images to become three. Focus on the center image to see the 3D effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can duplicate the effect using two digital cameras and putting the images side by side on a computer screen.

  • Staring too long at the pictures can give you eye strain and a headache.
