40D Battery Removal
The Canon EOS 40D digital single lens reflex camera (DSLR) can use a variety of lithium battery types including the BP-511A, BP-511, BP-512 or BP-514. All four battery models are rechargeable and must be removed from the camera to be charged. The Canon EOS 40D camera can also be powered with disposable or rechargeable AA batteries when the camera is fitted with an optional BG-E2N or BG-E2 vertical grip accessory. Rechargeable AA batteries also need to be removed from the camera to charge on a separate wall mounted charging device.

Main Battery

Turn off the Canon EOS 40D camera. Look at the back, lower portion of the camera. Flip the power switch to the "Off" position.

Flip the camera over, resting the body and lens in your non-dominant hand. Hold the camera securely.

Slide a fingertip or pencil tip into the recessed square on the bottom of the battery compartment door. Pull the black oval button towards the center of the camera to release the door.

Press the white lever, located on the lower right corner of the battery compartment, to the right. This will partially eject the battery.

Pull the battery out the of the compartment. Close the battery door. Listen for it to click into place.
Vertical grip Batteries

Turn off power to the camera (see Main Battery Section, Step 1).

Locate the battery door release button to the right of the wheel dial used to adjust camera settings. Use your fingertip or a pencil tip to pull the button to the left to open the battery compartment door.

Use a thumb to move the orange lever(s) to the right to release the battery(s). Pull out the battery(s). Press the battery door back into the base of the vertical grip until it clicks into place.

Tips & Warnings
The BG-E2N and BG-E2 vertical grip accessory can also accommodate one or two BP-511A, BP-511, BP-512 or BP-514 batteries.
All batteries should be removed from the Canon EOS 40D camera when the camera will be put in storage or not used for several weeks to reduce the chance of damage from leaking or bursting batteries.
