How to Add a Smoking Room in Your House
Smoking does not only affect the smoker---there are more than 46,000 deaths per year in the U.S. related to heart disease due to second-hand smoke. So if you plan to smoke in the house, show courtesy and respect for the health of the others in your home by setting up a smoking room. An ideal smoking room will route smoke directly out of the house and seal any openings so that smoke will not affect anyone else in the dwelling.

1
Select a room on the topmost floor of the house. Smoke travels up, so if you turn a downstairs room into the smoking room, chances are good that the smoke will permeate throughout the upper rooms. Make sure that the room has at least one window.
-
2
Install door sweeps at the bottom of all of the doors in the room. These are rubber or metal strips that you nail to the bottom of the door so air does not leak in or out.

-
3
Apply insulation strips to the other three sides of the door (top, left, and right). This will help stop the smoke from seeping through the cracks of the door.
-
4
Position two high-powered floor fans on the opposite side of the room from the window. Leave these fans running whenever the room is in use.
-
5
Cover any vents in the room with a magnetic vent cover whenever the smoking room is in use. This will help prevent smoke from moving through the house and into other rooms that have vents. Find vent covers at your local hardware store.
-
6
Remove any carpeting and leave a basic hard floor in the room. This will help reduce the "smoke smell" in the room when it is not in use---smoke becomes ingrained in the fibers of carpeting over time.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure that you leave the door of the smoking room closed, windows open, and fans on for at least two hours after using the room. Leave the door closed at all times if possible.
