How to Use Ear Buds As Hearing Protectors

How to Use Ear Buds As Hearing Protectors thumbnail
Noise-canceling ear buds can be used as hearing protection.

Ear buds can be used for a lot more than just listening to your favorite songs from a portable CD or MP3 player. Ear buds that are classified as "noise-canceling" are designed to keep all external noises from entering your ear. Because of this, they can be used as a rudimentary form of hearing protectors. You simply need to insert them into your ears correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a pair of ear buds that are designated as "noise-canceling." As opposed to normal ear buds that rest comfortably on the exterior of your inner ear, these ear buds are physically placed inside your ear canal the same way ear plugs are. Due to their snug fit and overall design, they successfully block the vast majority of external noise from entering your ear while they're inserted.

    • 2

Insert the ear bud with the "L" on it into your left ear. Gently press the rubber cap on the end of the ear bud into your ear. Do not press too hard---you want it to fit comfortably.

    • 3

Insert the ear bud with the "R" on it into your right ear. Again, do not jam the rubber cap on the end of the ear bud into your ear---gently insert it until it is all the way in. Once this is done, your noise-canceling ear buds will essentially be acting as regular ear plugs.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you just want to use your noise-canceling ear buds to protect your ears from sounds and won't be using them to listen to an MP3 player, wrap the cord up and put it in your pocket. You don't want to get the loose, dangling cord caught on something which can rip the ear buds from your ears and cause pain.
