How to Macrame Snowflakes
Macrame is a craft that involves tying knots into decorative patterns. A variety of materials can be used depending on the desired finished look, including string, silk, yarn and hemp. Any of these work well for snowflakes. This simple snowflake done all in one color will be a source of enjoyment for years.

1
Cut 12 cords to 36 inches each. Dip all the ends in glue, and allow them to dry completely. This will prevent the ends from fraying. Use a larks head knot to attach all the cords to a 3/4-inch ring, folding them in half as you go.

2
Tie two square knots with each set of four cords as you work your way around the ring. Each square knot will have two working cords and two filler cords, and the first square knot should rest up against the larks head knots, and the second square knot should rest against the first one. You should end up with six sections created by two square knots each. Try to keep the knots equally spaced.

3
Tie a round of alternating square knots about 1/2 inch from the previous round of square knots by taking two cords from one square knot and two from the one right next to it. Repeat this step again for another round of alternating square knots about 1/2 inch from the previous round. The second round should line up with the square knots tied in Step 2.

4
Tie another square knot with the same cords as the last square knot you just tied. This should be about 1 inch from the previous knot. Make picots by sliding that knot up to the previous one. Tie one more square knot with the same cords, and tighten it as much as possible. Repeat this around the snowflake.

5
Apply clear-drying glue to all the knots, and allow it to dry completely. Then trim all the ends to about 1/4 inch, and dip those ends in the glue so that they become stiff when dried. You'll want to stretch them out a bit to dry so they form a fan.

Tips & Warnings
Securing the cords to a project board, such as a firm pillow or hard foam, will keep them taut while you work.
You can also change the size of your snowflake by changing your materials. A thicker material will make a larger snowflake.
