How to Prepare to Take CLEP Examinations

The College Board administers the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). The CLEP program provides great opportunities to save on college tuition and shorten the time to college graduation. Many colleges allow students to test out of college classes by passing the tests. However, students must study on their own time to prepare to take CLEP examinations. Students need to find suitable CLEP study resources. The College Board and other companies provide extensive resources to prepare for the tests. Students should utilize the various resources to improve their chances of passing CLEP exams.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a copy of the CLEP exam guide for the exams you would like to take. These exam guides are official publications of The College Board. The 2010 prices are $10 per guide. Use the guides for sample practice questions and test-taking strategies. You can also purchase the latest "CLEP Official Study Guide." The official guide is a compilation of all the individual exam guides. Purchase the official guide if you intend to prepare for at least three CLEP examinations. The 2010 price of $24.95 is cheaper than buying three individual guides.

    • 2

Buy textbooks related to the CLEP subject exams. The College Board designs CLEP tests to determine if the CLEP test takers have the same kind of knowledge as a student who actually took classes in that subject. Use The College Board's list of recommended textbooks for each subject exam. Follow the links under "Subject-Specific Resources" to find the textbooks for each subject.

    • 3

Read through the textbooks as if you need to learn everything for a final examination in a real class. Make an outline of key information as you read through the textbooks. Use that outline for review purposes in the days leading up to your test.

    • 4

Get more preparation with PassYourClass CLEP study guides. Unlike the official study guides, you can prepare for the CLEP tests with actual study lessons. Use commercial study guides to hone in on the most important material for each test. No study guide will completely replace the study of actual textbooks. However, these guides work great as a review of highlights after reading the textbooks. Each guide also has more sample CLEP questions to use for practice. As of 2010, prices are about $36 for each exam study guide.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the CLEP Sampler software demo to familiarize yourself with the computerized test format and CLEP question types. Download and install the demo at The College Board's website. The CLEP Sampler does not have sample questions. However, it will help you become more comfortable with the test environment and speed up your test-taking time.

  • Confirm with your individual college first to determine which CLEP examinations that it accepts for college credit. Each college has its own list of acceptable exams.
