An existing concrete patio offers an excellent, durable base for a paver patio, and can save you a lot of time and cost as it eliminates the need to pour a concrete slab. Laying the pavers yourself, rather than hiring someone to do it for you, can also save you a significant amount of money. Plan on spending at least a weekend working on your patio. Instructions

    • 1

Mix the TSP with water according to the directions on the can of TSP. Scrub the existing concrete patio with the solution and a wire scrub brush. Rinse the patio with water and allow it to dry before moving on to the next step.

    • 2

Pound each of the four wood posts into the ground at each of the corners of the existing concrete patio.

    • 3

Form a border by lining up each two-by-four along the edge of the existing patio, attaching each of the two-by-fours to the wood posts with a hammer and nails.

    • 4

Pour a 1-inch layer of mortar on top of the existing concrete patio, within the confines of the two-by-four borders you installed around the edges.

    • 5

Spread the mortar around with a trowel until it's level and even.

    • 6

Set the pavers flush against the two-by-four border, starting in one of the corners. Place the pavers about 1/4-inch apart from one another.

    • 7

For each paver that is not fitting flush into the building area, measure and mark cut areas, and then cut with a wet saw to fit.

    • 8

Allow the mortar to dry for 24 hours once all pavers have been set.

    • 9

Mix the grout according to the directions on the package. Spread the grout around and into the spaces between each of the pavers, using a grout sponge. Allow the grout to dry for 12 hours before proceeding.

    • 10

Remove the wood posts and two-by-fours that you installed around the border of the existing patio.

    • 11

Wipe off the surface of the pavers with a separate sponge and water. Rinse off the top surface of the pavers and enjoy your new patio.
