How to Make Macrame Cord

How to Make Macrame Cord thumbnail
Macrame is the art of making knots.

A macrame cord can be made of a single color of yarn or with multiple colors. The cord can be fashioned using any of the many macrame knots repeatedly. These cords can be used in jewelry making---for bracelets, anklets or necklaces---or with other crafts, such as in hanging baskets for plants. The thickness of the finished cord depends on the thickness of the yarn or rope you use for the individual strands.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with two strands of yarn, cording or rope. Tie the ends together with a basic overhand knot (the same knot you use to tie shoelaces). Anchor the knot on a board or other workspace using a pin.

    • 2

Wrap the right-hand strand around the left, going over and behind. Pull the right-hand strand back through the loop (or space) created by itself as it wraps around. Pull the strand back down.

    • 3

Reverse by wrapping the left-hand strand around the right, pulling it through the loop (or space) created. Pull it down securely. Now you have two half-hitches.

    • 4

Continue the process by alternating right around left, then left around right, for as long as you want to make the cord.

    • 5

To finish, tie off the end with another overhand knot.
