How to Find the Number of Hits on Each Web Site
Statistics are an important part of managing your web presence--finding the number of hits and the amount, type and frequency of visitors to your site can make or break your site's performance. Learning your statistics provides a gateway to understanding what content interests browsers, which pages are the most sticky and how many times a visitor returns. If you have multiple domains you need to track, using free online software like Google Analytics or StatCounter will provide a wealth of data you can turn into information useful for your business.
Instructions
-
Google Analytics
-
1
Go to Google.com and type in "Google Analytics." Click the "Google Analytics Official Website" link. If you have a Google account, click the "Access Analytics" button and enter your login credentials. If you do not have an account, sign up for one, it's free.
-
2
Click the "Add a website profile" link towards the bottom left of the "Overview" page. Click the "Add a website for a new domain" radio button under the "Choose Website Profile Type". Add the URL of the site you would like to track under the "Add a Profile for a new domain" section. Only enter the "www" portion in the blank text box, not the "http://." For example, enter www.yourdomainname.com. Choose a time zone territory or country and your time zone.
-
-
3
Click the "Finish" button. This will bring you to the "Tracking Code" page.
-
4
Determine what you are tracking. Your options are a single domain, one domain with multiple subdomains or multiple top-level domains.
-
5
Copy the tracking code provided by Google. Paste the code into each page you would like to track immediately before the </body> tag. This will prevent your web pages from loading too slowly, as it would if you were to paste the code at the top of your page. Click "Save and Finish" to save your tracking code and profile information.
-
6
Wait 24 hours for Google Analytics to begin tracking the pages within your site. Create multiple profiles for each domain you would like to track. Return to view your website traffic.
StatCounter
-
7
Go to the StatCounter website at Statcounter.com. Register at the site by entering your basic contact information. Select your time zone and click the "Start a Project" button.
-
8
Enter your project settings. Enter the internal title, URL, category, time zone, maximum visit length and your log size. If you would like to block your own visits, enter your IP address in the "IP Blocking" box. Click the "Next" button.
-
9
Click the "Configure & Install Code" button on the congratulations page. Choose the type of counter you would like to use. Your options are visible tracker, invisible tracker, visible counter on home page or button only. If you choose a visible counter, your visitors will be able to see your traffic.
-
10
Copy and paste the code provided by StatCounter into each page you would like to track. You can place the code anywhere within the <body> and </body> tags. Once you are finished pasting the code, return to the StatCounter site and click the "Real-Time Stats and Visitor Reports" button.
