How to Drive a Forklift on Grass
The standard forklift is designed to operate on a smooth level hard surface such as concrete. While these machines are intended to handle large heavy loads, the conditions under which these loads can be handled are somewhat limited. Whenever a forklift is removed from a standard environment great care must be taken in its operation.

1
Accelerate and brake smoothly, much like driving a car on icy roads. A standard forklift is equipped with slick tires with little or no tread. These tires work very well on concrete and asphalt as long as these surfaces are dry. These tires have little if any traction in wet conditions or when conditions are out of the ordinary. Grass surfaces are out of the ordinary for most forklifts and traction will be a major issue. If the grass is wet, traction becomes a even greater issue and safety concern. At times, it may become impossible to efficiently or safely operate the forklift on wet grassy areas.

2
Examine the terrain for potholes or uneven conditions. The grass, if thick, can obscure these holes and low areas making the operators job much more difficult. The operator will need to show great caution and be very aware of any changes in the terrain. Load handling on grassy surfaces must also be altered. The operator will need to be very aware of the soil conditions beneath the grass. If this surface is uneven or has areas of soft or sandy soil, the weight of the machine plus the weight of the cargo could cause the wheels to sink and the forklift become inoperable.

Maintain a proper center of gravity at all times. Forklifts are intended to operate on level surfaces. Operating on any type of slope or incline dramatically raises the danger level for the operator and nearby pedestrians. The high center of gravity on the forklift makes even the slightest incline a hazard. When handling a heavy load, this becomes more exaggerated. A raised load being transported on an uneven surface can result in a machine tip-over. Tip over accidents are the leading cause of fatalities involving forklifts. Grassy areas will rarely be perfectly level and great attention must be paid when working with a raised load.
