How to Get Car Tags in Alabama
The state of Alabama requires that you complete certain steps before getting license plates for your car. You have 20 days from the purchase of your vehicle to obtain registration and license plates. If you just moved to Alabama and are carrying a valid registration from another state, you have 30 days from the day the vehicle entered Alabama to register it, according to the Alabama Department of Revenue.

1
Obtain liability insurance for the vehicle. You might also require other types of insurance, depending on the vehicle. Alabama does not require you to show proof of insurance but takes the signing of the registration form as confirmation that you have insured the vehicle properly.

2
Get a certificate of title for your vehicle before applying for registration. You need to do this for any vehicle made after 1975 and any trailer or mobile home made after 1990. The Alabama Department of Revenue has designated several agents throughout the state, including any vehicle dealership licensed by the state, county license-plate-issuing officials (see Resources section for listing), and certain banks and credit unions. As of early 2010, it costs $15, but other local fees might apply.
