Make a Corn Cleaner

Those who use corn to heat their homes in the winter know about the soot and dust that comes with a corn burner. The quality of corn you put into your corn burner has a lot to do with how clean it will burn. Corn that has just been harvested will burn very dirty because it will contain husks, dust and plant pieces. These particles burn fast and create a dust in the hot air drawn out of the corn burner. Making a corn cleaner to provide clean kernels for your corn burner is the smart solution to this common problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the 5 gallon bucket half full of corn.

    • 2

Stretch the 1/4-inch hardware screen over the top of the 5 gallon bucket. You can get the hardware screen from any home or hardware store. It has 1/4-inch holes in it that allow everything but the corn kernels to fall out.

    • 3

Fold the edges of the screen over the sides of the 5 gallon bucket. Wrap a wire around the top circumference of the bucket and tie it tight to hold the screen in place.

    • 4

Turn the bucket upside down and shake it up and down. Do this for several minutes. The floor under the bucket should be covered with husks, dust and plant pieces.

    • 5

Unwrap the wire and pour the clean corn into the corn burner. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 until you have cleaned enough corn for your purposes.
